Core sleep vs deep sleep on Apple Watch: what is the difference?
On Apple Watch, Core combines non-REM stages N1 and N2; Deep corresponds to non-REM stage N3. REM is a separate stage. These are estimated sleep stages, not interchangeable quality scores.

What is Core sleep on Apple Watch?
Core is Apple’s label for stages N1 and N2. It does not mean that the watch recorded no useful sleep. Read the label alongside Deep, REM and Awake rather than treating every minute outside Deep as wasted sleep.
Core vs Deep vs REM: read the labels first
Core covers N1 and N2, Deep covers N3, and REM is rapid eye movement sleep. A sleep-stage chart estimates when these stages occurred; Sleep Score summarizes selected features of the night. One cannot be substituted for the other.
Where can I see Core and Deep sleep?
After a tracked night, open Sleep in the Health app on iPhone and inspect the stages chart and its time range. Apple Watch also shows sleep information in the Sleep app. If only total sleep appears, check the recorded source and Apple’s sleep-tracking setup before assuming that your sleep stages were absent.
How should I use the numbers?
Review several recorded nights, total sleep and how you feel rather than trying to meet an invented Core-to-Deep ratio. A watch estimate is not a sleep-lab assessment. The web bedtime calculator estimates possible times; it does not identify your actual sleep stages.
Frequently asked questions
Is Core sleep the same as deep sleep?
No. Apple maps Core to N1 and N2, and Deep to N3.
What percentage of Core sleep should I aim for?
This guide does not set an individual target. A single watch percentage cannot establish whether your sleep is healthy; the recording and your wider situation matter.
Can a 90-minute sleep calculator predict my Core or Deep sleep?
No. A fixed-cycle calculation is a planning estimate, not a measurement or a reliable prediction of an individual night’s stages.
Is Core sleep good?
Core is part of Apple’s sleep-stage classification, not a bad-sleep label. Judge the night using more than one stage total; this guide does not prescribe a Core-to-Deep target ratio.
